Mpumalanga born, Joburg based rapper Mankind got his start in music playing drums in church before being exposed to rap in high school. A part of Blacknation Music, he dropped his first EP ‘Give Dat Tenda’ in 2014 featuring the single 'Tony Yengeni'. His upcoming debut album (recorded largely at Red Bull Studios Cape Town) will be released later this year.
Teasing this release is his ‘Living Messiah’ EP featuring 5 brand new tracks with features by Boolz and Masedi. "The project was influenced by a very dark place I overcame. Especially if you listen to ‘Living Messiah’ it highlights conquering, overcoming depression and life struggles in general. It motivates whoever is listening and gives hope to the hopeless.”
On ‘No deposit’ he references an old township chant or song used by township school children when celebrating victory at sport tournaments and competitions. “It means ‘we have beaten them with a very high score’. Contrary to sport, the song depicts victory we have attained as the Blacknation Music and Video Network Team. How we keep on beating the odds against the movement, the great work and music we been putting on and also general life challenges we keep on overcoming. We stay winning..."
