Red Bull Studio Live Stage at Oppikoppi 2016

July 12, 2016

Back for its seventh year, the Red Bull Studio Live Stage at Oppikoppi 2016 features a host of hot headliners and the best of local beats, rhymes and rhythms. With acts spanning multiple genres over three days, attendees are spoiled for choice over at what has become one of the festival’s landmarks.

Headlining on Saturday is UK based rapper and musician Little Sims, a technically brilliant emcee and a challenging young voice in the global hip-hop scene, easily claiming her own space in the world of conscious rap and grimey bass music. With a string of EPs and mixtapes under her belt, she recorded her debut album, “A Curious Tale of Trails + Persons”, at Red Bull Studios London in 2015. Oppikoppi sees her first return to South Africa since her performance at iKasi Experience for Red Bull Amaphiko 2015, during which she also shot a music video for Gratitude, which was inspired by South Africa’s student protest movement.

Friday night sees German techno legend Marc Romboy deliver his signature sound that is nevertheless fresh and innovative. A part of the German techno scene since the early 90s, he founded his first label, “Le Petit Prince” in 1993. His current label “Systematic Recordings”, which he founded in 2004, has become one of the top Tech House imprints worldwide. As a producer he has released four albums, including collaborations with Stephan Bodzin and Ken Ishii. Having played renowned clubs such as Berhain, Watergate, Fabric and Rex, his performance

On the local side, Friday sees Daev Martin, Kid Fonque, Julian Gomes and Bruce Loko of the Stay True Sounds crew bring in the night. Johannesburg-based artist, DJ and producer Daev Martin’s beats are soulful and warm, with elements of breaks and instrumental Hip-Hop. A vital part of South African club culture for the last 20 years, Kid Fonque’s wide palette as a DJ embraces everything from bass and broken beats to bossa nova, hip hop and every shade of house. Julian Gomes meanwhile is firmly rooted in house music, both as a producer and DJ, with his productions receiving recognition in the form of airplay, as well award nominations and wins. Finally, Bruce Loko, who began as a DJ before moving into production including collaborations with renowned artist, Atjazz.

Among others, Saturday features the sounds of Nonku, Fever Trails and Sketchy Bongo & Aewon Wolf. With a sultry, yet strong voice, Nonku’s performances are powerful. Her vocals are punctuated by bass heavy rhythms that result in soulful, danceable grooves. On the other side of the spectrum is Fever Trails with his playful take on electronica. With intricate drum programming, smart harmonies and light synths, his music features elements of lo-fi, techno and electro pop. Multi-talent Sketchy Bongo will be blazing up the stage with crew member and performer Aewon Wolf. This mega-producer is the man behind many of the nation’s top hits, as well as topping the charts himself and alongside rising star Aewon Wolf, will undoubtedly deliver a rapturous performance.

The final day features a line-up that includes DJ Lag, Nasty C, Revivolution, as well as the Fiction crew of Tommy Gun, Haezer and ANG. Gqom originator DJ Lag will be bringing out his high energy, syncopated sound, with its’ relentless rhythms bound to ignite the dance floor. Another Durban-based musician, Nasty C joins us on stage to deliver his brand of home-grown hip-hop that has seen him rise up to become one of the most hotly tipped South African emcees of 2016. On a different front, holding down the conscious, real hip-hop front, is the Jozi collective Revivolution, with FuSion, Fudge Da Fugitive, Illite Mc, One L, ImproPoe and Killa M each bringing their own style and energy to the stage.

With Cape Town’s Fiction crew represented by Tommy Gun with his blend of Indie, Disco and House, Haezer’s EDM productions and ANGs eclectic selection of beats, Sunday features something for all tastes.
