Red Bull Studio Live at Oppikoppi 2015

August 05, 2015

The Red Bull Studio Live Stage returns once again to the momentous celebration of South African music that is Oppikoppi. From the tried and tested 4/4 sounds of South African house and techno to the meteoric Jozi hip-hop movement to the unstoppable juggernaut that is drum and bass to the leftfield corners of live electronica, the stage is set to showcase some of South Africa’s best electronic music artists, DJs, producers and emcees.

House music is well represented this year with the undisputed king of deep house, Black Coffee headlining Sunday night. He will be joined by arguably the queen of the local house music scene, DJ Zinhle. And while Coffee and Zinhle take charge of the classic and beloved 4/4 sounds, the likes of Trancemicsoul, whose cosmic soulful sonics saw him accepted to the Red Bull Music Academy in 2013, and Kyle Watson, whose tough bass-house expertise has seen him release music on labels such as Dirtybird, will be repping the more current sound of house.

Take a listen to Emotional Canvas by Trancemicsoul and My Toys by Kyle Watson both released this year by the Red Bull Studios Cape Town.

The last few years has seen South African hip-hop grow in leaps and bounds in terms of not only maintaining its foothold as the most popular genre in the country but also by creating a distinct South African voice through vernacular rap and rhyme. Leading the charge this year is Okmalumkoolkat, whose work at the Red Bull Studios goes back to the days of Dirty Parrafin. Having just released the video for Free 100kMaCassette, encouraging fans to push his social pages to 100 likes or followers, undoubtedly the masses at Oppi will be amped to see him in action.

He will be joined by fellow Boyzn Bucks emcee Stilo Magolide and Cashtime all-star Kid X. On the flipside, repping the underground is Yugen Blakrok from Iaepetus Records who is steadily making a name for herself worldwide as a formidable lyricist and performer.

In terms of live electronica, 2015 has been a prolific year for Shane Cooper aka Card On Spokes. Kicking off the with the lauded On The Low featuring Okmalumkoolkat and Nonku Phiri, his recently released Sunwalker EP has received critical acclaim.

Other live electronic acts to catch are the legendary Sibot, returning to the Red Bull Studio Live Stage for the fourth year and fellow legend Felix Laband who has just release his fourth album, Deaf Safari, on Compost. Listen to Sibot’s Arc-Eyes EP and Felix’s If I Gave You My Love released by the Red Bull Studios below.

On the techno front, Johannesburg pioneers Digital Rockit and Cape Town upstart Audiojerk will be closing off Friday night’s revelry. Saturday will see Drum n Bass dons Hyphen and Rudeone joined by D&B prodigy Chee, who seems to have come out of nowhere with his own style of massive neurofunk.

As always if you are at Oppikoppi this year make sure to head over the koppi onto the other side of the festival. If you’re not already convinced, you’ll see why South Africa is delivering some of the finest electronic and urban music in the world right now.
